In the United States, there are 60,000 new cases of throat cancer reported a year. My family is part of that statistic. Four years ago, my great-grandfather, Juan, was diagnosed with throat cancer. Unlike the normal prognosis, he passed away just 5 months after he was diagnosed. Throat cancer is defined as a disease where malignant cells form in the tissues of the pharynx. Throat cancer is also known as pharyngeal cancer. There are different sections that can be affected by throat cancer; these sections include laryngeal, nasopharyngeal, oropharyngeal, hypopharyngeal, and glottis cancer. Some of the signs and symptoms of this disease include ear pain, sore throat, frequent headaches, and trouble breathing or speaking. The chance of me getting throat cancer is less likely than it is for my grandmother or eve n my mother. These are just three of the many possible causes of throat cancer. As with any other disease, there are many different diagnostic tests that can be done to diagnose whether or not one has throat cancer. One of the possible tests that can be done is a physical exam of the throat and neck. Another possible exam is a CT scan. This is a medical imaging exam that exerts tomography. A biopsy can also be used to diagnose throat cancer. A biopsy is a surgical procedure that involves removing tissues of an area that may be infected, and viewing them under a microscope. When using a biopsy for diagnosing throat cancer, the tissues would be removed from the throat and any specific spot that the cancer may be infecting. Other possible diagnostic tests that can be done include an MRI, x-rays, PET scans, and barium swallow tests. A barium swallow test is when a patient drinks a chalky colored liquid that contains barium. When the barium is ingested, it lines different parts of the th roat so they are visible on an x-ray, and a diagnosis can be made.
